| Movie Log - June 2009 |
[Jul. 9th, 2009|01:18 pm] |
Movies I've watched or re-watched this June include: Do the Right Thing, Clerks, Land of the Lost, Choke, Tokyo Zombie, Paul Blart Mall Cop, The F Word, Trinidad, My Life in Ruins, Touch Base, Dead End, Duel, Fabulous: The Story of Queer Cinema, The Doors, Simon Birch, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines, Life After Tomorrow, Those Daring Young Men in Their Jaunty Jalopies, Willy Wonka and his Chocolate Factory, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Aladdin, Happy Feet, The Dark Knight, Imagine That, A Face in the Crowd, An American in Paris, Airport, The Reaping, Population 436, Virtuality (2009) and Fantasia 2000.
The best this month (that I had not seen previously) would be My Life in Ruins and, believe it or not, Paul Blart Mall Cop and Imagine That. The first is just a good chick flick good for women and men, and the latter two are prime examples of movies that exceed expectations. Even low expectations. The worst would easily be Wil Ferrell’s Land of the Lost. I've briefly reviewed some of them at my Welcome to Hell blog, among lots of other pop culture stuff, check it out if you're interested. |

PAUL BLART, MALL COP? Really? I saw it and I thought it like too many so-called comedies today: it's actually a TV pilot on steroids.
Yes, really, Paul Blart. It's all about expectations, my friend. I expected utter shite and what I got was a sly and subtle, but comedic remake of Die Hard in a mall. Yes, still a slob comedy, but a good one. I liked it.
I also liked Life After Tomorrow a lot as well but forgot to put that in. A painful but entertaining documentary about all the ladies who played Annie over the years.
I should qualify June's list however. There really wasn't much I had not seen before this time out. Face in the Crowd, Duel, Dead End and Willy Wonka are all among my absolute faves.
I hear you. My problem is mainly that I don't think Kevin James is funny at all in any way, shape or form. I'm convinced that KING OF QUEENS stayed on the air so long because of the mad smokin' hot Leah Remini who was for me the real comedy star of the show.
But what do I know? Last I heard, PAUL BLART, MALL COP had grossed something in the neighborhood of $200 million so obviously I'm in the minority as to how funnny he is.
Again, not a great movie, but much better than I expected. I'd give it maybe two and half stars out of five. I really have no idea why it made so much money either.
Now as far as "King of Queens" goes, we might have a fight on our hands. While Leah Remini may be hot (tho notably not my type) I found her completely unfunny on that show. Comparatively Kevin James sucked in Mall Cop, but in "KoQ" he's the comic genius there.
Ew, I threw up just a little in my mouth just then saying the word 'genius' in relation to "King of Queens"... ;-)
See, this is why life is never boring for me...here we have two guys who watch the same thing and yet have such different opinions about it.
I don't think I've ever laughed once at anything Kevin James did on KING OF QUEENS. And Jerry Stiller should have been ashamed to collect a paycheck as he simply played Frank Constanza for another 10 years (KOQ did run for 10 years, right?) judging by the dozen or so episodes I've seen.
Like I said in my earlier post, what do I know? I'm a guy who still thinks GREEN ACRES is hilarious and I'm overjoyed that Comedy Central has started reruns of DR. KATZ again as that show makes me laugh until my sides hurt.
Agree to disagree, man, we're cool.
And isn't that cool about "Dr. Katz"? I just caught it the other night and was so thrilled to see it back on! Woke The Bride up I was laughing hard.
